Here’s how a Blower Door Test typically works:
- Installation of the Blower Door: A specialized fan, known as the blower door, is temporarily installed in an exterior door frame of the building. This fan is equipped with a variable-speed motor to control the airflow.
- Sealing Openings: To create a pressure difference between the interior and exterior of the building, all other openings, such as windows, doors, and vents, are sealed tightly.
- Depressurization or Pressurization: The blower door is then activated to either depressurize or pressurize the interior space. During depressurization, the fan pulls air out of the building, creating a lower pressure inside. Conversely, during pressurization, the fan blows air into the building, creating a higher pressure inside.
- Measurement of Airflow: The blower door is equipped with pressure gauges to measure the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the building. Additionally, airflow is measured to determine the volume of air moving through the fan at a specific pressure.
